Audrey M. Cumming

     Audrey Marie Cumming, 100, recently of Hamilton, OH and previously of Mount Pleasant, MI died April 15, 2017 at Westover Retirement Community.         

     Mrs. Cumming was born July 14, 1916, at Fayette, OH, the daughter of Earl Ernest Severence and Amber Marie (Van Arsdalen) Severence.  She attended public schools in Munson and Morenci, MI and continued her education at Eastern Michigan University, Wayne State University, and Central Michigan University.

     She started her teaching career in 1955 in the Detroit Public Schools. She later served as a remedial reading supervisor in the Blanchard and Mount Pleasant Public Schools and Central Michigan University.

     Mrs. Cumming was united in marriage with John Cumming on October 7, 1939. They had two sons: Robert, retired from the staff of Rice University in Houston, TX, and John (Marilyn), retired from the faculty at Miami University of Oxford, OH.  Mrs. Cumming is also survived by four grandchildren: Molly of Austin, TX; Jennifer of Portland, OR; Laura of Portland, OR, and Benjamin (Lisa) of Atlanta, GA and two great-grandsons, Bryce and Kyle of Atlanta, GA.

Mrs. Cumming was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

     Mrs. Cumming was an avid gardener and long-time member of the Mount Pleasant Federated Garden Club.  She was also a collector of children’s books and was the author of several magazine articles about literature of the nineteenth century Sunday school movement. She was a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Mount Pleasant, CMU Faculty Dames, Historical Society of Michigan, and Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel.

     Mr. and Mrs. Cumming traveled through many different countries of the world and through all but two states of the Union. Their last trip was a cruise through the Arctic Circle and along the coast of Greenland.

     A memorial service will be held later at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers friends may contribute to the Humane Animal Treatment Society of Mount Pleasant or the William T. Bulger lecture fund at Central Michigan University.  Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
